Thanks and Letters

If like Larry Londre you have a sharp eye for the small things—handmade branding labels on a jar of honey; “rooms for rent” and “cafeteria” signs; cuentapropistas selling at a street fair or street market; a donkey posing for tourist pictures—you should see and hear his lively talk on marketing and advertising in Cuba.

Thanks from Alice Germanetti, The Germ Factory

Larry Steven Londre is the one marketing guy you want to have in your corner. He’s smart, experienced, trustworthy and a decent human being. As his copywriter at Grey on Vons, he always trusted my creative instincts, provided brilliant strategic insights and knew how to connect with our busy retail client. They truly respected him.

As a guest lecturer in his USC class, I witnessed firsthand the profound effect he had on young marketing students. He’s an amazing teacher, having instructed an army of young business minds how to think.

As the marketing director for Vons, Directv and The Music Center of Los Angeles, Larry over-delivered successful results every time. Clients could sleep at night knowing Larry was on the case.

And that’s only half the story. Larry has always done more than his share for the greater good of the Los Angeles community, using his expertise and connections to make the world a better place.

Wish he was running for president!

Thanks from George Castrillon, CSUN 2009

“I studied under Larry Londre a couple of years ago and he was an AAA rated professor. His class was incredibly valuable due to how interactive and practical he made the Marketing course. I was challenged to look at the Marketing field from different perspectives I had never even thought of which has become very useful today in my career as a financial advisor for affluent clients.
He was very professional, approachable and one of my favorite professors.”

Hi Larry,

I wanted to thank you once again for speaking to our class on Monday. I learned from my students last night that they really enjoyed the presentation, and so did I. It’s been a great experience keeping in touch with you and finally meeting you.

When you come to campus again, please let me know, as I would love to catch up with you.

Best,

Larry is one of the best professors I have had the pleasure to meet at the University of Southern California. His years of professional and teaching experience are evident in his comfortable and highly interactive teaching style. His vast connections allow him to bring in excellent guest speakers from all disciplines within the advertising industry to add great value to the class. He stays up to date on real-world examples and brings them into the classroom to further explain course concepts.

Larry is knowledgeable, organized, and above all, passionate about his work.

Thanks from Eunice Noh, JOUR 340

Hi Larry,

I just wanted to thank you for being such a great teacher! I learned a lot this semester and wanted to share with you how great of an experience the final project and the class overall has been.

I am so sorry to hear that you are not coming back, but I know that USC is missing out on a great professor.

Thank you again!
Eunice Noh

Thanks from Andres Guarnizo-Ospina, JOUR 340

Larry, thank you for a great semester! I enjoyed all of the guests very much, and thanks to this class truly discovered that I liked advertising. Have a great holiday. I’ll keep you posted.

Dear Mr. Londre,

Last semester I had the privilege to have you as my professor in the Integrated Marketing Communications class (440) at California State University Northridge. I truly feel that your guidance from day one, the class assignments, tests and team project of creating the advertising plan along with the creative for Mountain Dew Code Red, gave me a most clear picture to effectively start my career in advertising.

I also want to thank you for the time you took to help me with the job hunting process, and the generous letter of recommendation you were nice enough to send my way.

I feel blessed to have gotten a position as an Advertising Account Coordinator for Anita Santiago Advertising Inc., based in Santa Monica; I start February the 11th 2002. I will keep in contact with you and let you know of my progress.

Sincerely,
Andres A. Saavedra

STILL my absolute favorite class at USC.

Hi Larry,

I hope that you have had a great summer and that this message finds you in good health and high spirits. I have spent the summer delving into a new internship with Disney’s Cable Networks Group. I was at ABC for 2 years doing quantitative research; but, I made the decision to hop over to qualitative work with focus groups and survey testing at Disney and I love it! The department is under the Research umbrella, but more specifically Brand, Strategy, and Marketing Research. I’m so thankful for 340, as I have definitely been about to keep up with any marketing lingo thrown my way and have creative insights to offer about our advertising strategies. So thank you for that! I still give an hour speech to anyone who asks me about taking your class - it is STILL my absolute favorite class at SC.

Thank you so much!

Take care,
Tiffany Wexler

Thank you for all of your help and guidance from Mike Lee, JOUR 340

I wanted keep in touch and say thank you for all of your help and guidance. I was really lucky to have you as a teacher at USC. I wanted to let you know that I am starting a new job as a designer tomorrow at Direct Partners. I really like their direction and they have acquired some bigger clients since I interned there last summer. They still do direct marketing but they are doing a lot of other traditional advertising as well now.

All together it seems like the company is on the up rise and there is a good mix of young and experienced people. Anyway, thanks for everything and I will let you know if I am available to speak to your class in September when the time draws closer. Have a great summer!

Michael Lee

"I learned a lot more than I ever thought I would," Cory Scholl-Spencer, JOUR 340

Dear Professor:

Thanks a lot Larry, this semester was a lot of fun! I learned a lot more than I ever thought I would. I have to wait until I finalize my schedule, but barring any conflicts- I’d love to come. Is it ok if I get back to you in the next week or so?

Also, I don’t mean to be premature- but I was wondering if you knew when we would be getting our final grades for the project?

Thanks again, and I’ll let you know about next semester as soon as I can,

Best,
Cory Scholl-Spencer, Team-Outre

Dear Larry,

I would like to say thank you again for a wonderful class. I really appreciate your dedication to teach us the entire industry layout and educate us in how to work in the advertising business. I learned so much more than I ever expected in an introduction class.

I took some pictures at the final class and here they are. I will keep you informed of any new job offers as news comes in.

Hope to keep in touch and please feel free to reach out at anytime.

Thanks from Sose Ohanian, MKT 304

Professor,

I wanted to thank you for one of the most informative and fun classes I have taken at the California State University, Northridge. I truly enjoyed coming to class week after week. All of the guest speakers were amazing. It was great to hear the points of view from different professionals who have great accomplishments. You have taught me so much, most of which I have applied already to my current job.

Never have I met a professor who cared about their students as much as you and I wanted to thank you for that. We all really appreciated that.

Sincerely,
Sose Ohanian

Thanks from Liz Wyckoff, MKT 304

My friends and I went to dinner last night and were talking about how much we learned in class that can be applied to the real world. Thank you so much for sharing that with us. That was definitely a once in a lifetime semester, your marketing class.

All the best,
Liz Wyckoff

Old Student Seeking Advice and Guidance, James Co-Enriquez, MKT 304

Dear Professor,

I took your Marketing lecture some years back and have come to the end of my college journey. Ironically, you were actually the first one to introduce me to this website. If you cannot remember, I presented you with a Apple award during the semester I attended your lecture at CSUN. I’ve only been searching for entry level positions for a little over a month now, however I was wondering if you knew of a good places to “take root” so to speak in the marketing industry.

Thank you for your time,
James Co-Enriquez

Thanks from Jacqueline Schorr, JOUR 340

Hi Larry,

I just wanted to thank you so much setting up the tour today at Davis Elen. It was truly amazing and really got all of my wheels spinning. Pam was a gem, and all of the staff was wonderful. It is extremely refreshing to have a Professor who provides us with practical knowledge, experience, and introductions.

Thank you again and see you on Tuesday,

Best,
Jacqueline Schorr

Thanks from Ana Slavin, JOUR 340

Hi Larry,

I so enjoyed your class last semester that I decided to minor in advertising and I am applying for summer internships at ad agencies. Of the agencies that you mentioned in class and that I toured, I am applying for internships at Deutch, Saatchi & Saatchi, RPA, Chiat\Day and the agency on Fig (David Ellis? I couldn’t find it online). I was wondering if you could suggest other agencies that have good summer internship programs.

Also, I attached my revised resume and a cover letter for RPA. I’m sure you’re very busy but I value your opinion and, if you have a chance to read them over, any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Finally, if I do have an opportunity to interview at an agency, could I give your name as a reference?

As a side note - I assure you I am not intending to brown-nose here - I wanted to say thank you for a great semester. It is such a relief to know that I would love a career in advertising and that it fits all of my eclectic interests.

Hope you’re having a great year!

All the best,
Ana

Thanks from Alexis Shaw, JOUR 340

Hi Larry,

just wanted to thank you for a great first experience in delving into the world of advertising - 340 class really piqued my interest in the field. On the last night of class, you had mentioned that you’d like me to come in next semester and speak to your upcoming spring Journalism 340 class. I wanted to know if that offer still stands, seeing that I was really looking forward to doing so. Additionally, over break I began to research internship opportunities for the upcoming summer. Seeing that I’m from New York, I was wondering if you could recommend any agencies on the east coast that you believe would provide unparalleled learning opportunities and that might be a good fit for me. It would be extremely helpful.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Alexis Shaw

Thanks from Megan Ladd, MKT 304

Hi Larry,

I’d love to come back to talk about the projects. Our team was very proud of what we accomplished and I still can’t believe how much I learned this semester.

Thank you for providing our class with such a positive and useful learning experience, and bringing in so many great speakers from diverse backgrounds. I appreciate the broad exposure the industry, and I’m actually having lunch with Kuuipo tomorrow! In addition to pursuing my interest in advertising further and applying for an advertising minor, I’m also hoping to secure an internship at a larger agency next fall, when I’m a Junior. Your class been very helpful.

Thanks again for everything,
Megan

Thanks from Constantinos Drimakis, MKT 304

Dear Larry,

I would first like to say thank you very much for teaching this class. I personally had a great time in your class; you definitely have a different approach which I really enjoyed. I have completed my quiz and received a 35. I will be coming by next semester to say hi and gain more knowledge from you.

Best regards,
Constantinos Drimakis

Hey Larry,

I just wanted to thank you for a great semester! The speakers were awesome and I feel like I really got a good taste of what the industry is like and how it works. Thanks again!

Happy Holidays,

Thanks from Alison Daniel, JOUR 340

This is Alison Daniel, one of your students from last spring’s Journalism 340. I just wanted to drop a line and say hi and I hope you are doing well! Also I wanted to tell you that I really miss your class, it has been my favorite by far here at USC. I wanted to let you know that if you ever want me to come to one of your future classes to talk to your new students just let me know, I would love to help you out. I did an internship this past summer in London for a PR/Advertising agency and had a really amazing experience! Hope your fall semester went well!

Fall 2009

Thank you for everything! You have been a great teacher and I do feel very prepared for an interview in the real world with an agency. This class along with my internship at MySpace have been a perfect match. I know new terminology and have an new even more positive attitude towards pursuing a career in the advertising world.

Thank you for all your help:)

Fall 2009

It’s strange how the semester went by so quickly, but thank you for making this class as awesome as possible for us! I think our whole class really appreciates all of your time and effort you put into making this class worthwhile and valuable. All of the guest speakers were great, and thank you for your efforts to bring those speakers in and arranging all the trips to the agencies. I wish I could thank all of the professionals who came into class again because they gave such great insight about their work and life in general. Also, I appreciated how they were willing to sacrifice their time to speak to us and look and critique the campaign that we had been working on throughout the semester. I must admit that there was a lot of work required for creating this campaign, but after seeing all the completed works today in class, it was definitely worth it. Thank you again, and I hope you have a great rest of the year!

“Larry’s class is one of the best classes I’ve had, and it was great having Larry as a professor. When we started the class I was unsure what career I was going to go into. After taking Larry’s class, I know that I want to go into advertisement. If you’re unsure about what classes to take at USC, Larry’s class is definitely a must.

“Thanks to Larry’s guidance and teaching, I was able to do very well on my internship interviews, and landed an awesome internship!”

Thanks from Josh Tucker

Larry,

I cannot thank you enough for giving me a second chance and the opportunity to continue in this Advertising class. Until this point in my life I had always found advertising to be interesting but never dreamed it could possibly be my future.

My Deutsch interview was scheduled for Wednesday, but I had an interview with TBWA/Chiat Day today and have been given the opportunity to be an account intern for Energizer and Prudential. I start Wednesday morning and have only you to thank.

Josh

“Larry Steven Londre’s Journalism 340 class at USC truly inspired and influenced my personal career goals. He was an amazing resource to his students and brought in exceptional guest speakers who helped to bring the “real world” of advertising into the classroom. The group project was a practical and exciting way to discover the process of advertising and to learn the value of teamwork. Larry’s class was one of the best experiences I have had during my time at USC and continues to help shape and inform my interests in working in the field of marketing as a whole.”

Thanks from Kadrian Alvarenga, MKT 304

Dear Larry

I hope this letter finds you well. I just wanted to thank you for all of the useful and insightful help and advice you have given me over the past couple of years.

Your 340 Advertising class was truly one of the highlights of my academics at USC.  The things I have learned in school, and from you have gotten me to where I am as a USC alum.  And with a job at Creative Artists Agency (CAA), starting this Monday.

Please accept this gift as a small token of my appreciation. Let’s stay in touch.

Thanks again for everything.
Kadrian Alvarenga

Thanks from Trong Nguyen, MKT 304

Dear Larry:

I wanted to let you know that I had a very enjoyable experience in your MKT 304 class this semester.

Although business law is my major, I have gained an extensive amount of knowledge from your lectures, textbook, articles, and speakers that will help me one day if I ever get a case, and I probably will, dealing with Marketing concepts.

I hope you have a great summer and good luck in all your ventures.

Thanks again,
Trong Nguyen

Thanks from Raelynn Gian-Hartlove and Team 23, MKT 304

Hi Larry,

I just wanted to thank you for the Marketing class you taught this semester. I learned a lot about Marketing and have actually found an interest in it now.

The class was fun and really kept my attention throughout the entire semester.

Thanks for a great class.

Raelynn Gian-Hartlove

Thanks from Taylor Witte, JOUR 340

Thank you again, Larry, for an amazing class. I loved every minute of it and will (and already have!) recommend it to all of my friends who are even remotely interested in Advertising and Marketing. I came in an undecided Freshman, and now I am leaving your class knowing for certain that I would like to pursue a minor in Advertising and possibly transfer to the business school to study marketing. So I just wanted to let you know that this class had a profound effect on me, and I appreciate all you have done for us. Thank you!

Best regards,
Taylor Witte

Thanks from Mike Lee, JOUR 340

Hi Larry,

I just wanted to say thanks for everything. Your class has honestly been a life changing experience for me as I now want to embark into the world of advertising. All semester you inspired me so greatly with your insights and scheduled speakers and I tonight I tried my best to show you everything that I learned and what I am capable of.

I am currently trying to upload my presentation for you. Unfortunately since it is over 1GIG I am having difficulty finding a file sending host that will send it without paying for a subscription. I’m glad you liked my presentation tonight. Many, many hours spent on it! It should be on our New Declaration Copy Deck DVD in Keynote and PDF Format.

Also, I would love to come back next semester if you would like. Keep me posted on that!

Class was awesome! Thanks again!

Just wanted to thank you for the great semester as well. It was great having you as a professor and when we started the class I was unsure what career I was going to go into, now I’m pretty positive. So I wanted to thank you a lot for that and let you know that if you need a student to invite for next semester I will more than gladly accept the invite. Also, I was wondering if you have any advice/guidance in me finding an internship for the summer (I know it’s a bit late). Yet again thanks for the great semester.

Thanks from Sarah Soewatdy, JOUR 340

Thank you so much for the great semester! It was an honor and I really enjoy being in your class.

Time really do flies by during your interesting, stimulating lectures. I appreciate the tours and speakers that you have organized for us. I gained a wonderful experience from all of them. I also appreciate the lectures that you have given, it is definitely something that I cannot get from just reading a textbook. Your last lecture about the lessons in life in advertising was also very valuable and interesting.

So Thank You!

I would love to come to speak to your new class next semester. Please let me know if you need me. I hope you will have a great summer, and please keep in touch!’

Yours Sincerely,
Sarah Soewatdy

Thanks from Alison Daniel, JOUR 340

Hi Larry,

Thanks for a great semester!!

I really learned a lot. I was wondering if you could pass on the emails for our guests that we had yesterday? I would just like to ask them a couple questions!  Also, I am looking for internships this fall at any advertising, marketing, and PR firms, do you know of anyone who is looking for an enthusiastic Trojan this fall?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Larry, I’ll be sure to keep in touch!

Alison Daniel

Thanks from Teng Li, JOUR 340

Hi Larry,

Thank you for teaching such a great class and giving me such a valuable experience. It was definitely different from any other class that I’ve taken at USC, which made it interesting and unique.

I really gained a lot from doing the team presentation on M&M’s and thank you for bringing in so many experts throughout the semester! All the best!

Thanks from Pamela Johnson, JOUR 340

Hi Larry,

First I would like to thank you for such a great class. I really loved working on the final project and presenting it. I would not mind at all coming back next semester to speak to your class.

Also, I was wondering if you have some of the contact information for the speakers who came to talk about media sales. Sales is something I am interested in.

Thank you!
Pamela Johnson

Thanks from Mary Burris, JOUR 340

Dear Larry,

Thank you for a great semester.  I really enjoyed our class and found it to be very beneficial to my career aspirations in marketing.  I found the other team presentations to be an excellent experience.  It was interesting to see how everyone interpreted the assignment and the different elements they used within their presentations.  I wouldn’t have thought that they would be as diverse as they turned out to be.  I was also very impressed with everyone’s work overall.  I enjoyed the judges and in the future think it would be beneficial to even have more, or to get written feedback from them as well.

Best,
Mary Burris

Thanks from Roxanne Norcio, JOUR 340

Hi Professor Londre,

I was in your Intro to Advertising class last year and worked on the Starbucks campaign.  First of all I want to thank you for a great semester! I really enjoyed your class and it was because of you that I realized I had a strong interest in advertising. I recently went to a creative workshop at DDB in Venice, and I am attending another one soon at Saatchi & Saatchi. On top of that, I am applying for a summer internship program that selects graduating seniors and places them in an ad agency. It’s all very exciting.

If for nothing other than an informative conversation about the advertising industry, I would love to sit down with you and catch up.

Thank you again!
Roxanne Norcio, Team Java Nuts

Thanks from Bahareh Mehr, MKT 100

Prof Londre,

I just wanted to thank you for a great class and I actually enjoyed it! It was one of my more interesting classes at CSUN and I wanted to thank you for the information and help the guest speakers gave us and the gifts and advice. I really like your teaching method.  It makes the class more fun but we learn, also.  Don’t change your method!

Thanks from Claudia Codron, JOUR 340

Dear Larry:

Thank you for the warm holiday wishes. I would also like to take this opportunity to reciprocate with the “thank yous” and than you for teaching me about the advertising world - it has been an immensely educational and thoroughly fun experience!

Hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving!

All the very best,
Claudia Codron

Thanks from Courtney Isom, JOUR 340

Dear Larry,

Thank you for a great semester! I have learned so much from you—real world stuff that you definitely cannot learn in a textbook. And of course, I’ve made some great contacts with people in the industry. I think my path upon graduation in May will be to continue working in Market Research at Lieberman Research Worldwide and then move into Account Planning in an agency. The team project really showed me that I have a talent for creative strategy (aka Life is a Competition and Integrated Ink, coined by me! I am so proud about that, especially after our successful presentation today) and for overseeing different aspects of a project to make sure it is cohesive and targets the right segment, following our market research.

This really is a great class—such a great class that I am helping educate my mom about advertising agencies because she wants to go back to advertising and leave PR.

Thank you so much, and I hope to keep in touch with you.

Best,
Courtney Isom

Thanks from Janet Cato, JOUR 340

Dear Larry,

Thanks for a great experience this semester. Your advertising class opened up the world of advertising to me—a field that I was once curious about and now am excited to pursue.

I would love to come and talk to your class next semester. Mark me down!

All the best, have a safe and fun holiday and will be in touch.

Best,
Janet Cato

Thanks from Alexandra Tapley, JOUR 340

I just wanted say thank you. This whole day was the first time I have believed that I can be somewhat successful in the advertising world. I will let you know more later about why you are the reason my whole day was a success.

I just wish this USC class lasted the whole year and that I had taken it my freshman year. But better late than never. I am going to miss it. Can I take it again next year? Just kidding No, seriously can I?

All the best, have a safe and fun holiday and will be in touch.

Thanks from part of team six, MKT 100

Larry-

I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed taking your class. You are genuinely a wonderful professor and I wanted to thank you for making this experience one I will never forget. That being said, I want to offer you and your wife a complimentary, ballroom dance lesson. I guarantee that you and your wife will have a great time! I want you to think of this as a thank you for teaching me so many useful and immediately applicable concepts. Maybe in return, I too can teach you something useful. Again, thank you.

Sincerely,

Professor Londre,

Thank you for a GREAT marketing class!!

All speakers were a great addition to our marketing class. The speakers yesterday have made us more knowledgeable on behavior at interviews and on writing resumes. This process is definitely important because it’s our chance to make a first impression to the job we are applying for and we know we can never get a 2nd chance to make another first impression!

We wanted to let you know that it’s sad that the semester is already coming to an end next week and we also wanted to say that this class was a great experience for all of us!

You’ve been wonderful as our teacher and we hope you have an AWESOME summer this year!

Thank you note from Matthew Campos, MKT 304

Good Morning Professor/Mr. Londre,

My name is Matthew Campos. I re-introduced myself to you last night at the LA Film Festival Opening Night Gala. I just wanted to say it was a pleasure seeing you again and that your class (CSUN MKT 304) pretty much taught me and exposed me to the most important aspects I have encountered in my young marketing career. I currently am employed by the Los Angeles Times and conducted my last ad sales project in Westwood (The LA Film Festival). I remember you speaking of your level of involvement with the Westwood community; hence the reason I probably saw you last night.

I do not want to take up too much time in your busy day, but I just wanted to extend my gratitude for the many lessons you taught in your class. I still distinctly remember Mr. Rob Allen (HONDA USA) who came to speak (I even wrote and email to you last year regarding his lecture) and your other colleagues (one from Sit N Sleep, Disney, and the other from SCBA, radio ad sales).

Those guest speakers were a real inspiration and great insight into the “real” world.

Thanks so much for sharing your great work and expertise; I hope to keep in touch and hear from you soon.

Thank you and have a great day.

Matthew Campos
Los Angeles Times, Westside Advertising

I too agree with my classmates that you saved the best speakers for last.  I started CSUN in 1999 and took a break (without graduating) in 2003. I did not have the motivation to want to do anything, and I do believe that instructors such as yourself that make these classes more interactive with people who have been in our position and have succeeded make the college experience one of a kind. You always hear success stories, but rarely do you ever see anybody coming back to share their career path and enlighten us. Especially from CSUN.

Thank you for a great semester!

I have been persistent in trying to add your class in prior semesters and you know what?  It was worth the wait.

You have definitely earned your “polished apple” award!

Thank you,
Justine Chang

Wow and thanks from Gabrielle Farrell, MKT 100

Wow! When you had told the class that tonight we would be privileged to have three of the best speakers I honestly took it with a grain of salt. Little did I know what I was in for when I sat down in class this evening. Tonight was by far the best and most informative 2 hours I have had in my 2 years of college. These were definitely THE BEST!! Thank you for giving me the opportunity and allowing them the time to share these extremely important life lessons. Through my semester I have never felt more motivated and excited about furthering my career then I did every Wednesday night after leaving your class. It was great to have you as a teacher and thank you for the impact you have put on my life. Have an awesome summer and thanks again.

Thanks from Sophia Kang, JOUR 340

Thanks Larry for this valuable teaching experience. I am only a freshman but “Introduction to Advertising” has been one of my most memorable classes this year. I’m actually going to minor in Communication Design because of it. It was a little hectic yesterday and I did not get a chance to talk to you about my resume. I have attached it below and I would still appreciate any feedback. It is still a work in progress but I am definitely going to need it this summer for jobs.

Best,
Sophia Kang

Thanks from Nicole Landa, JOUR 340

Hi Larry,

It seemed like there was a mad rush to say goodbye and thank you today after class but I wanted to send you an email letting you know how much I enjoyed the class.

Throughout the semester, I especially appreciated the group project and guest speakers. Especially for a graduating senior, testimonials from the ‘real world’ have been able to introduce new fields within advertising that I had previously been unfamiliar with. If you hear of entry level job opportunities, I’d love to be informed!

This class has been one of the more enjoyable ones I have taken while at USC. It is clear that you teach because you like to do it, and it shoes in your enthusiasm, thoroughness, and real life applicability. As my first (and only) advertising class at USC, I definitely think I chose the right one!

Thanks again, and if I make it big I’ll be sure to be a guest speaker!

Dear Professor Londre,

I just wanted to send a quick note to say thank you so much for this semester. I have learned SO much from your class. I am very impressed that you go above and beyond your role as a professor to encourage students to become passionate about advertising and I really appreciated the agency tours that you set up (I went to every one that I could and LOVED it!). I have realized this semester that account planning is really where my passion is. I have always loved studying business and strategy, but felt like I was neglecting my creative side. The more I study account planning, the more I realize that it encompasses everything I am passionate about. The research, the communication with consumers and the understanding of a product all go into the artistic creation of an ad. I find the entire process so completely intriguing. I want to become a master of account planning. I believe I would not have realized this until much later in my life without your class so thank you so much.

I really hope to stay in touch and I would love if you could mentor me once in a while in decisions I face in the future. Thanks again for your class, it has been one of the most valuable learning experiences for me. Also if you hear of any account planning internships opening up in the summer, I would love to be recommended. Thanks again for everything!

Sincerely,
Kristen Mooney

Thanks from Madisen Adler, MKT 100

Hi Larry!

I just wanted to thank you for such a great class. I feel that I learned so much and I truly enjoyed the class. Your teaching and passion for the subject has encouraged me to strongly consider making marketing my minor, if not my major. I hope to take another class from you, in the future!

Thank You,
Madisen Adler

Thanks from Wakefield Li, Jour340

Professor Larry,

I’d like to thank you for the learning experience you gave us in advertising. The opportunities for site visits you provided were really insightful in terms of learning what type of work is involved in advertising. Also, I liked the variety and the insights that speakers provided, of course through your personal contacts (from KBB and Netadvantage, various TV networks, agencies, and clients, among many others). Also, the Godiva project was helpful in learning how to work with others and develop spots as students, which I think is great for getting “hands on” work on what advertising is. I also enjoyed the words of wisdom that you provided, which were funny and useful.

I hope I was able to contribute something to the class, through my project, questions, and contributions to the class. I know you liked one of the answers I gave on the midterm, so perhaps you will use that for one of your later semesters of teaching.

Thanks again for a great delve into advertising, and I will be sure to keep in touch if I have any questions about advertising!

Best,

“Aside from being what can only be called a marketing and advertising expert, Larry is nothing short of a stellar teacher. He ably combines a love of the subject matter with sincere concern for his students into a class that is nothing short of inspirational. Students leave his tutelage with more than a grasp of skills and concepts; they leave with passion and an understanding of the bigger picture.”

Thank you from Asif Chowdhury, CSUN Spring 2007

I just want to thank you for your passion of teaching. Even though Marketing is not my major, but in order to be successful in current job market or business environment we need to have knowledge of everything. I think marketing is very important because in order to run any business; special as business owner- they need to know how to market and sell their product or even if you work for a company. Also, thank you for bringing some wonderful speakers through out the semester.

Thank you from Joel M. Hollaar, CSUN

Dear Professor Londre,

I was a student in your marketing class at CSUN a few years back. I benefited a great deal from your class, the guest speakers and the simulation. From the knowledge I gained in your class, I was able to expand my real estate practice by successfully marketing my name and persona.

Thank you for the opportunities from Lisa Sanchez Kennedy, JOUR 340

This is Lisa Kennedy, one of your former students from USC. It’s definitely been a while since we’ve spoken. How have things been for you?

I have finally graduated and am now working for Dailey & Associates. I have been working here for about a month now as an Account Coordinator for Honda Motorcycles. I love it here! I was speaking to Howard Berman about my experiences at USC, and when I mentioned your name, he said he knew you.

I wanted to truly thank you for the opportunities you have given to me throughout my years at USC. You’ve been an inspiration for not only myself, but many other students. Thank you for your support, knowledge and guidance.

I look forward to seeing you again someday-hopefully in the world of advertising! Take care!

Professor Londre,

I want to thank you for all the effort you put into our Marketing class this semester. I enjoyed your class very much and although my team did not do that well on the Pharmasim project, I learned a lot from your lectures and most importantly from the guests that you were kind to share with the class. It’s not that often that professors go the extra step to combine books with real expert speakers such as you did for our class.

Thank you again!

Thanks from Shuang (Lisa) Wu, JOUR 340

Hi Larry,

I hope all is well! I’m sure it is hard when you teach so many students, but I was in your Journalism340 class last semester (Fall 2006). I just wanted to email and thank you for being such a wonderful teacher. I am finding the valuable skills that I acquired in your class to repeatedly appear in my classes, as well as work.

With that said, I wanted to let you know that I was able to get a first round interview with Saatchi & Saatchi LA for an internship this summer.

It is an extremely exciting opportunity for me. The Jones Organics Tea campaign that we worked on has definitely increased my marketability amongst the competition. Again, thank you!

I hope your classes this semester are going well, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Warm regards,
Shuang (Lisa) Wu

Thanks from Erin Young, JOUR 340

Hi Larry!

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for a great year! I really learned alot and have confirmed my belief that I want to have a career in the advertising/marketing field. I enjoyed all of the speakers you brought in and loved getting a “real life” perspective on what it would be like to have a career in advertising. I also really enjoyed the tours of the agencies! smile

Thank you again for everything this year. I’m so happy I was able to take your class! smile

Larry’s Introduction to Advertising class is one of the best classes I’ve taken at USC. I really learned the ins and outs of the advertising industry and the Marketing Mix through lectures, readings, guest speakers, agency tours and the group project. Working with a team to produce an ad campaign from start to finish was an exciting way to put all that knowledge to use.

Hope you had a great holiday break.  I wanted to thank you for all your instruction in Mkt 304.  It’s always enjoyable to take a class from a teacher who is as enthusiastic as you are about their subject.  I felt all the quest speakers were excellent and enlightening.  They contributed experience and application to the textbook concepts.  The variation in teaching concepts with Pharmasim, speakers, lectures and projects provided a great learning environment which reinforced the marketing concepts.  Thanks for your motivation.

Thank you letter from USC Fall 2006, JOUR 340

Hey Larry!  I just wanted to thank you for such a great semester.  I came into the class knowing nothing at all about advertising, and I have gained so much real-life experience that I find myself using constantly.

Thank you for opening up a whole new field to me that I was unaware of before.

I really enjoyed your class!

Thanks,

Thanks from Camille Dizon, JOUR 340

Hi Larry,

My name is Camille Dizon, I was a student of yours last semester. My group did the “YORK. UNWRAP. UNWIND.” campaign. I just wanted to thank you for a very worthwhile class. Just yesterday, I interviewed for an internship position at MTV/Nickelodeon’s Ad Sales department and got it pretty much on the spot. One of the first questions they asked me was about your class and final project (because I had mentioned it in my cover letter). After telling them about it, they were very impressed and commented “I didn’t even think you get that kind of experience until after undergrad.”

Considering that I wasn’t even all that interested in advertising at first, I want to say that this is pretty huge for me. I grew up watching MTV and have always thought, “It would be cool to work there.” Now I get to see for myself first hand. Not to mention that the company is pretty big on promoting from within. If I work hard enough, I could be one of the 40% of interns that gets hired full time. And in some respect, I owe it to your class.

I guess I just wanted to update and share that with you because you asked that of us at the end of the semester. I hope your students this semester get as much, if not more, out of 340 as I did.

Again, THANKS. I wish you and your class a great semester!

Thanks from NEON, JOUR 340

As an undergrad at USC I took Larry’s JOUR 340—Intro to Advertising, and to be honest, it should be renamed: “Intro to Advancing in Life.” would seem to be more fitting. Now I know you’re probably saying that’s one of the most clichéd statements ever written, but I say that in all sincerity because I don’t work in advertising, yet I still on a daily basis put into practice the tools I learned from him.

The class transcended marketing or advertising or even any other university course. It was structured in a way where students could express themselves in a manner that suited their individual personalities. For the left braiders, his 9 P’s and dynamic marketing strategies evoked legendary late-night dorm room discussions, while the more creative students were encouraged to explore the vast artistic outlets that advertising offered.

I would recommend it to anyone. Thanks, Larry, you’re amazing!

Larry,

I am thankful that you were my strategy teacher.  I definitely appreciated the classes and the challenge of the assignments.  There were a lot of ways to approach them—a minimalist approach worked for some. For me, I enjoyed digging in past the basic material to find current information which went past the basic case studies.  Also, I loved the perspectives that you shared and really appreciated the speaker from Disney.  Great perspectives.

I hope Pepperdine maintained a reasonable balance of real world professionals on their part time staff and didn’t swing too far into using the full timers.

Anyway, best of luck to you in all you do.

Thank you so much! MKT 304 was a great class. I enjoyed the format of the class because you brought marketing to life with your teaching style. I enjoyed the speakers you invited, they were very informative and entertaining especially the last group (Keller, Kanuit, & Ward). Also the simulation was a great tool for us to experience how the marketing mix works at different levels and how important it is to weigh every decision carefully. What I learned this semester will surely be a great asset to me in my company and for that I am truly grateful.

I wanted to say thank you for such an enjoyable semester.

Thanks from Marine Palamutyan, MKT 304

Hi, Mr. Larry,

This is Marine Palamutyan from your Marketing 304 class.  I just wanted to thank you for the great opportunity of being in your class.  This was thus far my best course ever and I am sure that most likely I will not have any other class like this one.

You made the class so enjoyable and interesting that I didn’t want to miss any of your lectures.  I could honestly say that every day I learned new stuff in your class.  Most of all the speakers were all brilliant.  Your class “final” was the best of the best.

I learned so many useful tips from those 3 speakers that I am sure I will use it in the future for job opportunities. I thought that the food ordering during meetings was very thoughtful because it will say a lot about one’s manners.  And looking at an interview in a way of dating was also a new thing to me and it was really smart because when you compare they really are related in so many ways.  Overall great experience.

Thank you so much for all your efforts for trying to make this class the best one, and by the way you succeeded!

Have a great summer! Thank you again.

Communication and Marketing Brought Together, COMM 541

Professor’s Londre’s class is one where the “Communication” and “Marketing” worlds—traditionally kept apart in classrooms yet inextricably linked in the real world—are brought together. Taught as they co-exist in the current business and organizational world, professional-grade projects are completed that apply concepts learned in Larry’s class. The value of having an instructor who is immersed in the marketing and communication world on a day-in/day-out basis cannot be underestimated.

A Class Like No Other, MKT 304

Larry Londre’s CSUN MKT304 class was not like any typical class that I have ever taken.  On the first day, I expected him to be a boring professor who was going to dislike teaching and do whatever he could to make 9:45PM come faster so he could get the hell out of there.

To my surprise, that wasn’t the case. He teaching style kept us enthused and wanting to come to class.

This was the first class I have ever taken that didn’t have a mid-term and a final exam. We were mostly graded on the marketing simulation program we worked on in teams throughout the semester, which my team placed fourth out of twenty two.

His class was also exciting because we had a guest speaker almost every class time.

My two favorite speakers were Rob Allen from Acura Motors and DJ “E-Man” from POWER 106. Rob Allen went through a buying cycle of a car and detailed how they went about launching the Acura RSX.  DJ E-Man described why certain songs get played at certain times and showed us the music program player that the radio station uses.

How many professors have you had that prefer you to call them by their first name?  Larry was just that type of professor.

I guess he wanted us to feel as if he was not above us, but as an equal person who could be easily approached. Thanks Larry for the entertaining learning environment!

Feedback for Professor Londre's Jour 340 Class

“Londre’s JOUR 340 was not just a class. It provided real life experience and examples that tested our creativity and our ability to work in teams. The class allowed the synchrony between contemporary advertising and a student’s progressive way of thinking. It challenged students to look at past and present ways of advertising, and attempting to come up with their own solutions to the changing and fast-paced structure of the world of advertising. It was as though an agency’s thought, creativity, and processes were brought into the classroom, for students to analyze and create their own magic.

By working in teams to come up with a creative solutions, students were taken through the process of what it takes to create an advertising campaign-from start to the final product.

A sense of accomplishment was the most satisfying aspect of the class, as well as the allowance to enter the working world of advertising, without actually having to step into an agency.”

Praise for Professor Londre and the MBFE 648 Class

Professor Londre’s marketing experiences and teachings greatly increased my marketing knowledge in the several key areas of marketing strategy, consumer purchasing habits, advertising and branding. His classes were very interactive and I found our continuous discussions of current events informative and helpful in my business discussions outside of the course. I plan to enroll in additional marketing courses in Spring 2006, after I finish my core classes next trimester. I hope Professor Londre will continue to teach additional marketing courses in the future as his course and teaching style were beneficial to my understanding of marketing.

Recommendation of Larry Londre by Thomas O'Sullivan, MKT 304 O'Sullivan

I am writing to you regarding Professor Londre’s Marketing 304 class which meets on Wednesdays from 10am-12:45pm.  This is only the second time I have e-mailed a department chair regarding a professor and the positive experience I had in that class.

Professor Londre is one the better professors because of the way he teaches.  I enjoyed the way he taught the class by not reading from the textbook like many professors do.  It was beneficial that marketing is what he doesfor a living.  His passion for it shows and it made the class that more enjoyable.  I have always found that the best professors are the ones who actually do for a living what they are teaching and this is exactly the case with Professor Londre.

I also appreciated the fact that he does not rely on a lengthy paper to talk about a marketing plan but rather he uses the Pharmasim software which allows you to actually implement a plan based on a computer simulation.  This approach is a lot better than writing a paper about concepts.  The practicality of the Pharmasim project was more beneficial than any paper because it made you think.

What amazed me the most is how I was able to use it in my job field.  I am a police officer for the Los Angeles Police Department and business classes are not the norm for police officers.  Although I never thought I would be able to use marketing in the law enforcement field, I now realize I was wrong.  There are many recruitment ads out now for our department, and during the semester, many of us were allowed to provide input as to what was going to go into these ads.  I don’t like the ads, but I was able to provide my opinion.  It made it easier to talk about knowing some basics I learned from this class.

In addition, last week I took a promotional interview for the LAPD and was able to relate some of the concepts of the 9 P’s which were taught in class in one of my answers.  I was asked a question that basically asked how I sell the department in a positive way to people who dislike the LAPD for whatever reason.  I have been asked this question before on orals, but I was able to give my answer a new twist because of this course.  It seemed that the interviewers liked my answer based on the amount of writing they were doing.  Usually when they are not writing, you are not answering the question well.

I hope that you will continue to use Professor Londre in future classes.  Again, I feel the best professors are the ones who are part time and are teaching what they do for a living.  I do not enjoy professors who studied a field in college and never applied it in real life.

Thank you for your time.

Thomas O'Sullivan

Recommending and Thanking Larry Steven Londre for Marketing class, MKT 304

I am writing you as a student of Larry Londre’s Marketing 304 Class, and as an individual with the experience of such a class, wish to say how much I appreciated the opportunity to learn from Larry’s experience.

Beyond all uncertainty, it can be said for me, as well as those I worked with during the class assignments, that neither I nor they have ever had a class with such an impact on our scholastic lives.  I have learned a great deal from Larry, not only the typical mundane lecture information but more importantly real life, real situation and real solutions needed to understand marketing in the real world.

My friend and I often debate on subject matter which we have learned during our classes, he attends UCLA and took marketing this semester as well.  During a typical debate, I do not always feel adequately prepared, though during any debate pertaining to marketing, I am constantly informing him of various marketing strategies which I have learned this semester, information of which he is unaware.  He, having a job heavily reliant on personal marketing, would like to take Larry’s class, and plans to do so in the near future.

Further, I have several friends here at CSUN who would like to take Marketing 304 with Larry.  Unfortunately, my friends inform me, and I have verified, Larry is not scheduled as an instructor for the Fall Semester.  Of this I am vastly amazed.  Never in my experience at CSUN have I had an instructor with such passion for what he does. Never in my experience at CSUN have I had an instructor from whom I have learned so much.  Never in my experience at CSUN have I had an instructor whom I believe can actually assist me in my attempts to find a career.  Never in my experience at CSUN have I had an instructor who is more qualified, more knowledgeable and more willing to help students gain the knowledge of the subject matter.

I have had professors who I cannot understand because of their lack of understanding or inability to speak the English language.  I have had professors who have little knowledge of the subject and therefore teach strictly out of the book and evade questions delving deeper than the books breadth of coverage.  And I have had instructors who do not care about the material of which they teach nor the students whom they teach.  It is these instructors who decidedly obtain positions from semester to semester while the professors with the knowledge, passion, caring and understanding are not begged and coerced with any means necessary to instruct as many classes as they can possibly teach. Why, may I ask you, is this the case?  Is it because CSUN is a state school?  It was my understanding that CSUN was in the top 10 colleges in the state, or am I wrong in my statistic?

It is so difficult, at least within the Business department, to find anyone who will help a student.  Professor Larry Londre is of the mind that he is at CSUN as an instructor for a reason – to make a difference in people’s lives; he does this – effectively as I attest.

Finally, I ask you employ Larry as often as he is able and willing; he is an asset to your department, truly the school as a whole.

I cannot hide my passion; CSUN is soon to be my alma mater and I only wish it to increase in honor in the coming years.

Respectfully,
Joel H.

"All in all, you are a talented and an effective teacher. The students were respectful of you. And you were respectful of them. The content of the material was highly appropriate and relevant. You seem to really enjoy what you are doing and you are good at it."

Your class started promptly at 7pm and the large classroom (capacity = 75) appeared to be nearly full, save for about a half dozen students who quietly arrived within the next ten minutes.  On the Powerpoint screen was the Alex Osborne quote “It is easier to tone down a wild idea than to think up a new one.”

Your quote nicely set up one of the major topics discussed during the period—brainstorming (new product development.  You made several class announcements at the beginning, including one regarding the guest speaker for the second half of the class and one encouraging the students to dress up a little bit when they give their presentations in the next several weeks.  You showed them an agenda of the topics and presentations due for the next several class periods.  In short, you did a fine job of encouraging the students to stay on track and manage their time as the semester goes into its final six weeks.

Your lecture and class discussion was mostly on new product development issues and was sprinkled heavily with many interesting examples, anecdotes, and humorous musings, e.g., “DTSSY = Does That Sound Stupid To You”; Xerox’s handing off the GUI to Apple; the target marketing of the over 50 segments by Disney, Target, P&G; the target marketing of smokers by Topol, among many examples.

In the midst of lecturing, you also had your students break into their groups and arrive at such answers as “what questions do you need to ask to start a strategic marketing plan?” or, how many ways can we use a light stick (new product idea generation.  The student involvement level in these team moments was quite good, especially considering the large number of students in the class.

You made good eye contact with the students during the lecture and your demeanor was warm, personable, and open.  You were very well prepared for the class and you handled questions in a very appropriate manner.

All in all, you are a talented and effective teacher.  The students were respectful of you.  And you were respectful of them.  The content of the material was highly appropriate and relevant.  You seem to really enjoy what you are doing and you are good at it.

Dr. Patricia Riley
Director
Annenberg School for Communication

Dear Dr. Patricia Riley,

I am writing to bring to your attention Larry Steven Londre, a professor under whom I recently had the pleasure of studying while a student in Communications 541: Integrated Communication Strategies.

While I have known Larry for only a short time, I have been tremendously impressed by him. A professor in every meaning of the word, Larry is honest, fair, and genuine in his role as an educator. He exhibits extraordinary organizational and leadership abilities and has boundless energy and infectious enthusiasm.

Larry has developed a syllabus, curriculum, and course materials, recruited and coordinated an array of guest speakers, and directed classroom discussions that encapsulate a truly unique experience for his students.

Dr. Riley, I hope the information above helps to describe what an amazing asset Larry is to your school. Educators like him reinforce the prestige of Annenberg’s graduate programs.

“Quickly became my favorite class of the semester, Larry.”

Just wanted to say thank you for an excellent semester. I actually took this class on a whim and it quickly became my favorite class of the semester. I learned so much so fast and really enjoyed myself the entire time, and I hope you enjoyed this past semester as well.

If you ever need someone to come in to talk to your future students - and I hope there are many - I would love to try to give back some of what you gave me.

“This class has been the most incredible class I have taken at USC”

Thank you so much for a memorable semester, Larry. This class has been the most incredible class I have taken at USC. It has peaked my interest in advertising, which was once a completely unfamiliar territory to me. You’ve really made an impact on all of our educations at USC.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and passion with us, and I hope you go on to teach more students who will appreciate your class as much as I did.

Take care and enjoy the holidays,

“By far the greatest class I have ever had”

Larry,

I cannot thank you enough for tonight and for the semester. By far the greatest class I have ever had. I loved the project and am so impressed with what everyone came up with. Thank you again for this semester; it has shaped my life in ways that I am only beginning to understand. I will be adding a minor in advertising in the spring and hopefully pursuing a career as a creative director.

I cannot thank you enough,
Biz Wallace

“Honestly say I learned more practical applicable knowledge in your class than almost any other at USC”

Thank you so much for your comments and praise, I am so proud of my team too. We came a very long way. I can honestly say I learned more practical applicable knowledge in your class than almost any other at USC, so thank you very much for that. I know I will use what I’ve learned in whatever job I end up pursuing in whatever industry I end up selecting. If there is anything I can do to help please let me know.

All the best,

"Larry Londre is a brilliant, experienced professor"

Larry Londre’s JOUR 340 class has been the most memorable class I have taken during my three years at USC. He is incredibly knowledgeable and deeply cares for the well-being and education of his students. His connections in the real world enhance his students’ learning experience; he brings in multiple guest speakers every week and sets up agency tours throughout the semester to give us an opportunity to learn beyond the textbook. It is rare to find a professor who puts in as much time, energy and compassion into teaching as Larry Londre does.

If Professor Londre were not to return next semester, he will truly be missed and his absence will be felt at the Annenberg School. Throughout the semester, I have strongly recommended his course to my peers and spoken highly of him to my classmates.

I do hope you will take my words into consideration. I speak on behalf of my entire JOUR 340 class—Larry Londre is a brilliant, experienced professor of Advertising and I am honored to have taken his class.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Leher Pathak

“We keep seeing an upsurge in ‘Ambush Marketing.’  Ambush marketing is a marketing / advertising / promotional campaign that takes place around an event but does not involve payment of a sponsorship fee. Brands pay to become the ‘exclusive’ and ‘official sponsor’ of the high-level event, usually in a particular category or categories. Other brands then find ways to promote themselves in connection with the same event, without paying the sponsorship fee and without breaking any laws. Tricky and controversial examples:

  • On the way to the Opening Ceremonies, I saw it with Nike and Fuji in Los Angeles at the ‘84 Olympics. Converse and Kodak were the official sponsors, in their categories.  Few remember that.
  •
  • In the ‘92 Summer Olympics in Barcelona; Nike sponsored press conferences with the U.S.A. basketball team despite Reebok being the official sponsor. During ceremonies, the players covered their Reebok logos.
  •
  • In the ‘94 Winter Olympics; American Express sponsored the Games despite Visa being the official sponsor.
  •
  • In ‘96 a British sprinter used contact lenses with Puma logos embossed.
  •
  • At the ‘02 Boston Marathon, Nike sprayed Swooshes on runners at the finish lines.
  •
  • In the ‘06 World Cup, sponsored by Anheuser-Busch, Bavaria Brewery doled out orange lederhosen stamped with its logo.
  •
  • Proctor & Gamble, in 2009, handed out cans of Pringles labeled ‘These are not tennis balls.’
  •
  • At the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Kulula (South African airline) pulled back its ambush ad after a FIFA complaint that it infringed its trademark during the ‘10 World Cup. Kulula.com’s ad described the company as the ‘Unofficial National Carrier of the You-Know-What.’ Also during the tournament, in an incident similar to the ‘06 World Cup, two Dutch women were arrested and 36 women ejected from the stadium when they were spotted wearing short orange dresses made by the Dutch brewery. Anheuser–Busch InBev’s Budweiser was the official beer, both events."
